FERPA not HIPAA. In this episode your podcast hosts, Jose Sanchez and Jenn Tostlebe, talk about their experiences as teaching and research assistants during graduate school.
Jose is a doctoral candidate whose research interests are gang dynamics not only in American society but internationally, juvenile delinquency and victimization, and program development and evaluation. Jose holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Criminal Justice from Cal State Los Angeles. During his Master’s program, Jose conducted a research project looking at juvenile gang affiliation, substance abuse, and gender across different world regions. He was also a research assistant with the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development. Current projects include working as an assistant with Dr. David Pyrooz on the Gang Reduction Initiative of Denver and a study involving gang legislation.
Jenn is a Doctoral Candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Colorado Boulder. As a criminologist, she explores the intersection of social influences and individual characteristics and how they independently and interactively impact illicit activity during incarceration and post-release. Her research agenda concentrates on the empirical study of institutional corrections and prisoner reentry. Specifically, I focus on three main issues: (1) the application and elaboration of criminological theory to the landscapes of institutional corrections and reentry, (2) criminal justice system responses to incarcerated and previously incarcerated individuals, and (3) exploring the intersection between individual differences and social influences during incarceration and post-release. Her work has been published in journals such as Health & Justice, Homicide Studies, Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, and Preventive Medicine.
