In this episode of The Criminology Academy, Jose and Jenn chat with Professors Rosemary Ricciardelli and Michael Adorjan about their work on research ethics + challenges and best practices when it comes to research within the field of Criminology. Mike and Rose are the co-editors of the book Engaging with Ethics in International Criminological Research.
Rose is a Professor of Sociology, the Coordinator for Criminology, and Co-Coordinator for Police Studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Elected to the Royal Society of Canada, she is also the Vice Chair of the ARC NAC for the Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research and Treatment (CIPSRT). Rose’s research is centered on evolving understandings of gender, vulnerabilities, risk, and experiences and issues within different facets of the criminal justice system. Beyond her work on the realities of penal living and community re-entry for federally incarcerated men in Canada, her current work includes a focus on the experiences of correctional officers and police officers given the potential for compromised psychological, physical, and social health inherent to the occupations. Rose has published in journals such as the British Journal of Criminology, Punishment & Society, Sex Roles, and Theoretical Criminology.
Mike is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary, and Fellow with the Centre for Criminology, University of Hong Kong. His research and teaching focus on youth crime and cyber-risk, fear of crime, and perceptions of police. He is currently a Principal Investigator on a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council funded Insight Development Grant examining youth and cyber-risk in Canada. Mike has published in journals such as the British Journal of Criminology, Qualitative Sociology Review, and Theoretical Criminology.
